The Master of Arts in Educational Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (MEITE) is a 36-hour, professional degree program housed in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina’s flagship campus in Chapel Hill. Welcoming its first cohort in the fall of 2016, MEITE is a growing program with a mission to “Prepare leaders who produce, utilize, and analyze high-impact educational innovations for the social good across the public and private sectors.” Directed by Dr. Todd Cherner and advised by Ms. Aliyah Benton, MEITE is dedicated to serving its students, the fields of educational innovation, the University, and the State of North Carolina. To support the MEITE program, this website is intended to provide information to our incoming and current students. Please also visit our MEITE Program page on the School of Education’s website.

Our program is aligned to the Design Thinking principles, and we’ve blended its principles with emerging educational technologies and the learning sciences to provide dynamic experiences for our students. Using constructivism, our students experience Design Thinking as learners and then use those experiences to create their own innovations in the forms of prototypes, digital learning opportunities, and academic works! This approach allows our students to “walk” in their users’ shoes while ensuring their innovations are grounded in research and theory.

The program’s coursework is flexible, which provides for our students being able to identify specific courses that align to their areas of interest. This approach allows them to get the most out of the program, while having access to our School of Education’s distinguished faculty members! Throughout the program, our students attend networking opportunities and complete an internship in the Research Triangle, so they are able to make professional contacts and develop industry-ready skills.

If you have any questions about the MEITE program, please reach out to us at We are here to provide information, support, and guidance as you progress through the program and advance your career!
